Fog is in but winter chill yet to arrive

Though the city has been witnessing fog in the morning, there are no signs of winter arriving in the real sense. The temperature in the city is still higher than normal as the trough over Arabian Sea persists.

Though the city has been witnessing fog in the morning, there are no signs of winter arriving in the real sense. The temperature in the city is still higher than normal as the trough over Arabian Sea persists. The IMD has predicted that this trend would continue in the next two days.

The fog in the morning is due to condensation of moisture and not due to fall in temperature. “In the morning hours surface is cooler than the overlying atmosphere. Due to this, the moisture in the air gets condensed and fog is formed. However,it is mostly at the surface level,” said Medha Khole, director of weather section of IMD,Pune.

Compared to the normal temperatures in December, the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are more than 2 and 4 degrees respectively for almost a week now. On Monday, while the city recorded maximum temperature at 31.3 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was 15.7 degree Celsius.

“As the trough over Arabian Sea still persists, moisture content in the air is high resulting in high temperatures,” said Medha Khole, director of weather section of IMD,Pune.

According to Khole, the south-easterly winds are strong in the state. Generally, the amplitude of south-easterlies is limited to southern states of Kerala,Tamil Nadu or at the most Karnataka. At present,it has been covering Maharashtra too resulting in higher moisture content.

Khole also said that though the amplitude of the south-easterlies was higher it was not abnormal.
