Days after Mumbai police launched a massive hunt to trace the man who allegedly kidnapped and murdered a 12-year-old boy in Wadala, investigators have learnt that his last known location was Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir, from where he called his mother in West Bengal from an acquaintance’s phone.

According to police the boy was kidnapped by his neighbour around 7.30pm on January 28 after which his decapitated body was found amid the bushes at Kharganga near the Eastern Freeway on Monday. His head was later recovered from a nearby locality.

An officer said, “Soon after the boy went missing, we started tracing the duo and through CCTV footage, we managed to track them… we saw that he went with the boy into the bushes and walked out alone due to which we suspect that the boy was killed the same night.”

The investigators added that the suspect was last located in Jammu and Kashmir after he had called his mother on February 1 asking for a copy of his Aadhaar card.

“The suspect initially went to Pune after which he caught a train to Delhi and from there, he went to Samba by bus,” said an officer adding, “He got acquainted with a co-passenger in the train and he travelled with him to his house in Samba. He even used his phone to reach out to his mother in West Bengal and after staying there for some days, he escaped from there.” Meanwhile, police said that the postmortem of the minor was conducted on Wednesday afternoon.

“We got the report late. Doctors have reserved their opinion on the cause of death and whether the boy was sexually assaulted. His viscera shall be sent for further examination,” an officer added. To confirm the body was of the 12-year-old boy, police have also collected DNA samples of the mother for examination, an officer added.

The Wadala Truck Terminal police that had earlier registered a case of kidnapping, added sections of murder and destruction of evidence against the suspect on Tuesday.
