A day after the announcement of the schedule for the general elections, the opposition INDIA bloc will kickstart its poll campaign from Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park on Saturday.
The rally at the end of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will be a show of strength for the INDIA bloc, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj, CPI general secretary Dipankar Bhattarchaya, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren, among others, are scheduled to take part. AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge too will attend the rally.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said an invitation has also been extended to Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar.
Rahul, whose Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra concluded at Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr B R Ambedkar in Dadar, on Saturday evening, will undertake a ‘Nyay Sankalp Padyatra’ from Mani Bhavan to August Kranti Maidan on Sunday morning.
Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar’s office said eminent personalities from cultural and social fields will join Rahul in the padyatra. After that, the Congress leader will interact with participants at Tejpal Hall near the August Kranti Maidan.
Mani Bhavan was the home of Mahatma Gandhi whenever he was in Mumbai, while the Congress was founded on December 28, 1885 at Tejpal Hall.
Rahul on Saturday concluded his 63-day-old Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra here by paying tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar at his memorial Chaityabhoomi and reading the Preamble of the Constitution. The former Congress president was accompanied by his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Earlier, addressing a public meeting in the Dharavi area, he reiterated the Congress’ promise of caste census and asserted that poor women would get Rs 1 lakh every year in their bank accounts if his party returned to power. “Dharavi is yours and should remain yours. Your skills should be honoured and this place should become a manufacturing hub of the country,” he said, referring to the redevelopment project concerning the slum sprawl awarded to the Adani Group.
