Former Punjab education minister Avtar Singh Brar dies at 77

Suffering from a heart disease, Brar died while undergoing treatment at PGIMER Chandigarh.

Avtar Singh Brar, chairman of state-owned Punjab Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and a former minister, died Saturday at the age of 77. Formerly with Congress, Brar joined Akali Dal in 2014.

Suffering from a heart disease, he died while undergoing treatment at PGIMER Chandigarh. Brar was elected MLA from Faridkot in 1992 on a Congress ticket. He became state’s education minister in 1995 under the then CM Harcharan Singh Brar.

Brar again won Assembly polls in 1997 and 2007 from Faridkot on Congress ticket. However, he lost in 2002 and 2012.

His son Navdeep Singh Brar told the media “his father was admitted to hospital on November 22 after developing breathing problems”.

The cremation will be held in Faridkot on Sunday.
