Shahjahanpur police on Thursday arrested four persons, including the owner of a transport company, for the death of an employee who was brutally thrashed on suspicion of theft.
A video of a man getting thrashed while being tied to a pole had gone viral on Wednesday.
According to police, Shivam Johri alias Anshul, 32, who worked with Suri Transport Company for the last seven years, was beaten by a group of people on Tuesday evening after a hosiery firm owner complained that a bag of a cloth consignment had gone missing.
Police said that other employees of the transport company were also beaten before Shivam for the same alleged theft. While two of them – Rahul Kumar Verma (20) and Ram Niwas (35) – are recuperating at a hospital, two others – Raghubeer Verma (26) and Sanjay Verma (22) – have been discharged. “We have arrested four persons – Shivam Gupta, Govind Gupta, Raghav Gupta and transport company owner Bankim Suri – for the death of Shivam Johri. All the accused are in their 30s,” Superintendent of Police S Anand said.
“The postmortem examination found 11 injuries on different parts of Johri’s body,” said the SP said, adding the report found no evidence of electric shocks being given to the victim.
According to the SP, the two men admitted to a hospital received injuries on their heads, hands and legs.
A separate FIR has been registered against six persons, including Bankim Suri and Neeraj Gupta, a leading hosiery businessman of Shahjahanpur, for beating up Rahul Kumar Verma and Ram Niwas. According to the police, the five employees of the transport company were beaten up at the godown of Neeraj Gupta.
