Days after arresting three alleged ISIS operatives, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police Saturday arrested their four associates, including two former and a present student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), for their alleged links with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the agency said in a release.
Rakib Imam Ansari, a 29-year-old BTech and MTech graduate from AMU from Aligarh Friday, the statement said. The ATS nabbed Naved Siddiqui (23), who was pursuing a BSc from Aligarh Muslim University; Mohd Noman (27), a BA (Honours) from the university; and 23-year-old Mohd Nazim, a graduate; from Sambhal on Saturday, it said.
ADG, ATS, Mohit Agarwal said, “UP ATS has so far arrested seven persons of the module. Further investigation into the case is on.” Banned ISIS literature, mobile phones and pen drives were seized from the arrested accused, the ATS added.
AMU authorities said neither the UP Police nor the ATS so far verified the credentials of the arrested persons. The ATS statement said the fresh arrests were made based on information collected from the three accused arrested earlier. ATS said Nazim came in contact with the module through Noman and others. The arrested persons are associated with ISIS and have been planning attacks in and outside the state, the statement said. “They were allegedly distributing literature about ISIS to convince people to join ISIS. The accused were also using online platforms and holding meetings at secret places to prepare people for jihad,” an ATS officer said.
“The accused came in contact with each other during meetings of SAMU (Students of Aligarh Muslim University’ (SAMU),” he added.
