In the House: Illegal mining debate gets personal, ruckus ensues

The issue of illegal mining in western UP was raised during Question Hour by Rana.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed noisy scenes Friday after Cabinet minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati alleged that BJP MLA Suresh Rana’s brother was involved in illegal mining. While BJP members strongly protested the statement, BSP MLAs staged a walkout stating that minister was not taking action despite being aware about the person.

The issue of illegal mining in western UP was raised during Question Hour by Rana. He demanded that a high level committee be formed to probe illegal mining in the state.

However, Prajapati denied any illegal mining in the state but admitted to sporadic incidents. “Suresh Rana’s brother is also engaged in illegal mining. No one will be spared,” Prajapati said. On this, BJP members stood up demanding that statement should be removed from the proceedings.

Speaker Mata Prasad pandey assured the BJP members that he will look into the matter.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya asked why was minister so benevolent on minister’s brother despite knowing that he is engaged in illegal mining. “Is illegal mining being done under the patronage of government,” he asked.

Parliamentary affairs minister Azam Khan intervened saying government is taking action but legal proceedings will take their own course. “No one can be blamed for action of their brother or son,” Azam said.

Unsatisfied, Maurya and all other BSP members staged a walkout from the Assembly.

Other members also participated in the discussion. Many of them cited places in their districts where illegal mining is being done. BJP’s Lokendra Singh said: “When I raised the issue before Superintendent of Police in Bijnore he suggested me to fix a share in the racket”.

Prajapati claimed that a committee has been formed in every district headed by local DM to stop illegal mining.
