A 53-year-old doctor has allegedly been beaten to death over a land dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district, police said Sunday, adding that they had booked three people including the son of a man from whom the doctor had bought land.

Dr Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was posted at the Jaisinghpur Community Health Centre on a contract basis, was beaten up by Ajay Narayan Singh, a local resident, the doctor’s wife Nisha Tiwari said in her police complaint. After allegedly thrashing Dr Tiwari, Singh sent him home in an e-rickshaw. Dr Tiwari fell unconscious a few minutes later and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sultanpur Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar Srivastava said that Singh (35) had three criminal cases registered against him. The other two accused booked at the Kotwali police station over the doctor’s murder are unidentified people.

The police said they got information late on Saturday from the district hospital that Dr Tiwari had been brought dead. They said they were awaiting the postmortem report.

Nisha Tiwari told the police that her husband returned home from work around 4 pm on Saturday. After a few minutes, Dr Tiwari left home telling her that Singh had called him to his house at Narayanpur, a neighbouring locality.

“Around 8 pm on Saturday, an e-rickshaw pulled up outside their house when Nisha Tiwari was standing there. Dr Ghanshyam got down from the vehicle with blood on his clothes. His wife told us that the doctor had told her that Ajay Narayan Singh had thrashed him badly. A few minutes later, he fell unconscious,” said the superintendent of police.

Srivastava said that during the preliminary inquiry, it came to light that the doctor had bought land twice from Ajay Narayan’s father Jagdish Narayan Singh. “The second registry of land was done in 2021. A dispute had been going on between them since then,” he added.
