Announcing Azam Khan’s release from Sitapur jail, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav Tuesday said cases against the leader would be withdrawn when the party comes to power.

Amid speculations about Khan joining the Bahujan Samaj Party, Akhilesh called him the main face of the party in the fight against the BJP.

Azam Khan sahab has played the biggest role in our fight against the BJP from the time of SP founder Neta ji as well as with us.”

“We are thankful to the court and are hopeful that, in the future, no false cases would be registered against him,” said Akhilesh.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh also called the release of Azam Khan as a matter of relief for not just him and his family but “everyone who believes in justice”.

“Our heartfelt thanks to the court for upholding our faith in justice. Today, even those filing false cases have learned that every lie has a time limit, as does every conspiracy. The BJP never approves of those who symbolize social harmony,” wrote Akhilesh on X.

He further wrote, “Azam Khan ji will once again stand with every neglected, suffering… person and raise his voice against the oppression of the people by the BJP and their allies and as always, by becoming a symbol of the emotional unity of the country and the state, with socialist values and principles, will continue to move forward on the path of struggle for social justice,” he wrote.

He further declared, “We are hopeful that all cases against him would (be settled) in the time to come. Just like cases have been withdrawn by the Chief Minister, not just against himself but also against the Deputy CM and many other BJP leaders, cases against him (Azam) would be withdrawn when the Samajwadi Party government comes to power.”

Later, Akhilesh promised journalists that even cases against them would also be withdrawn when the SP government comes to power and added, “We would even help you with Income Tax and ED cases as well.”

Reacting to the Uttar Pradesh government’s recent order on caste-based rallies, Akhilesh said the government has done it as the BJP is afraid. It added, “Hamara pehla emotional rishta koi hai to woh jati hai (Our first emotional connection is with caste only).”

Following the Allahabad High Court directive seeking removal of caste displays in public, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a government order late Sunday night prohibiting “caste-based political rallies”, calling them a threat to “public order” and “national unity”.
