Addressing a rally in election-bound Bihar’s Sasaram, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday promised a “deeper probe” by the special investigation team (SIT) into the death of a 17-year-old NEET aspirant girl who was found dead in her hostel room in Varanasi in February this year.

Maintaining that the case is being investigated thoroughly, the CM said “whoever harmed her dignity will be sent to Yamraj’s (god of death) place”.

The death of the teenaged girl, who hailed from Sasaram, had caused a public and political outcry with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders along with the victim’s parents meeting Adityanath seeking his intervention into the matter. They also had met the then Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar who had ordered a probe by a team comprising two senior police officers from the Varanasi commissionerate.

In Sasaram, Adityanath was campaigning for Rashtriya Lok Morcha MP Upendra Kushwaha’s wife Snehlata who is contesting from the Assembly seat. MP Kushwaha too had met the family at her village and had sought strong action from CM Adityanath.

Addressing the gathering, Adityanath likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Upendra Kushwaha, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Chirag Paswan to the “five Pandavas,” saying the alliance has united with a common resolve to ensure that “jungle raj” will never returns to Bihar.

After the NEET aspirant girl’s body was found hanging from a window grille in her room on February 1, the police had filed a case of murder on her father’s complaint who accused the hostel owner of killing his daughter and staging her death as suicide.

The Varanasi police, however, had said that asphyxia due to hanging was the cause of the girl’s death. The then incharge of the local police station was removed following the DGP’s order.

When contacted, Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal told The Indian Express on Wednesday that medical and forensic experts were roped in to aid the probe.

The SIT is going through the “recreation of the scene of the place of occurrence”, he added.
