The Rampur police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested 15 people, including three women, for allegedly threatening and assaulting a 28-year-old temple priest over the use of a loudspeaker in the Sikandrabad village Friday evening. The police said the victim, Prem Singh, had been serving at the temple for the past three years.
“All 15 accused have been booked for breach of peace. They were produced before a local court, which granted them bail,” said Station House Officer (Tanda) Omkar Singh.
Sikandrabad village has a Muslim-majority population, and a police team has been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
According to the police, on Saturday, Prem Singh, along with a few local residents, reached Tanda police station and reported that some people had come to the temple in the evening and allegedly abused and assaulted him for playing a loudspeaker. He claimed the accused also threatened to evict him and seize his land. Additionally, he alleged that the accused warned of expelling other Hindu families from the village, stating that village pradhan Afsar Ali was supporting them.
Based on the complaint, the police lodged an FIR into the matter on various charges, including rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
