Citing threats to his life following violence in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas during the filing of nominations for the next month’s panchayat elections, the lone ISF MLA, Naushad Siddiqui, on Monday moved the Calcutta High Court seeking Z-category security. The petition is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday morning.
Siddiqui’s plea for protection comes a day after TMC MLA from Canning, Saokat Molla, was given Z-category security by the state government.
Workers of ISF (Indian Secular Front) and the ruling TMC (Trinamool Congress) had clashed during the filing of nominations last week in Bhangar, leading to the death of two persons.
While the Opposition accused TMC MLA Molla of fomenting trouble, TMC blamed the violence on the ISF.
On Monday, Siddique said he was ready to withdraw his party workers’ candidature “for the sake of peace in Bhangar”. “I will think about withdrawing our candidates, if the chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) wants so. I don’t want anyone from any political party to lose their lives,” the ISF MLA from Bhangar said.
Also, cross-complaints have been filed by TMC and ISF leaders over the recent violence in Bhangar. A police complaint was filed at Kashipur police station against Siddiqui for the murder of party worker, Raju Naskar, in Bhangar last Thursday. Another complaint was filed against 20 people, including TMC leader Arabul Islam and his son Hakimul, for the murder of ISF worker Mohiuddin.
