No loss of life has been reported in Andhra Pradesh even as heavy rain battered coastal Andhra Pradesh districts, hours after Cyclone Michaung made landfall between Nellore and Kavali, officials said Tuesday. But standing crops, especially paddy, have been washed away.
The state government has evacuated people on a war footing to avoid any casualties. About 9,500 people are being sheltered in 211 relief camps across eight districts—Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada.
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy reviewed the status of Cyclone Michaung and the progress of relief measures on Monday. Government officials and village and ward volunteers are providing essential items like drinking water, food and medicines to the affected people. The impact of Cyclone Michaung is decreasing in Tirupati and Nellore districts, which have been experiencing heavy rain.
Relief measures are in full swing in the two rain-hit districts and the collectors of Prakasam, Krishna, Guntur and other districts are on high alert, according to G Sai Prasad, special chief secretary (revenue and disaster management). Officials are working on a war footing to restore power supply in cyclone-affected areas.
The chief minister has directed officials to pay compensation within 48 hours if there is loss of lives and livestock besides distributing ration to the affected people using the services of volunteers and staff of the village and ward secretariats.
