The Noida police have arrested eight people — seven men and one woman — for allegedly running a large-scale fraud in the name of online betting and gaming apps.

According to the police, the group — operating out of a flat in Lawn Residential Society — used a gaming app called Winbuzz to lure investors with promises of quick profits.

They were arrested from the apartment on November 14 after the police received a tip-off, officers said.

Around 159 forged passbooks, 95 cheque books, 131 ATM cards, 114 pre-activated SIM cards, 61 mobile phones, seven laptops, and a tablet were recovered from the flat, officers said.

Police said the group’s modus operandi relied on opening multiple bank accounts using forged identities. “They first obtain people’s IDs, purchase fake SIM cards in their names and then open bank accounts using these SIMs. These accounts are then used to transact with users,” said DCP Shakti Mohan Awasthy.

Police identified the accused as Ankit Singh (24), Himanshu (20), Chirag Jain (21), Pratham Mishra (22), Harshit Verma (23), Ansh Kumar Verma (20), Nitin Babu (22), and Kirti (23), all residents of Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh.

An FIR has been registered at Bisrakh police station under the Gambling Act. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the money trail and identify others linked to the operation.
