Najeeb Jung inspects water machines in Dwarka

water ATMs will be cashless-vending machines and consumers can use rechargeable ‘smart cards’ to procure water from them.

Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on Monday inspected work on installation of water-dispensing machines (water ATMs) in Dwarka — an area acutely affected by water shortage. Expected to be complete by June 2015, the project, based on RO treatment technology, aims to supply water to a resettlement colony of around 20,000 people.

As part of the project, around 500 water ATMs will be set up across the capital. These water ATMs will be cashless-vending machines and consumers can use rechargeable ‘smart cards’ to procure water from them. Moreover, the water ATMs in Dwarka will end water woes of residents of Sahyog Vihar, a resettlement colony.

Accompanied by senior Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials, including the CEO, and PWD secretary, Jung checked the interceptor sewage facilities and water ATMs being set up in the area, a statement from the L-G’s office said.

“These water ATMs run on solar power. These ATMs will supply water to Sahyog Vihar. This is part of a project to set up 500 water ATMs all across the city, on the lines of Sawda Ghewra,” a statement from the DJB said.

Jung also checked the progress on another project by the DJB. Aimed at improving the quality of water flowing into the Yamuna, the DJB, under the Interceptor Sewer Project, will ensure the prevention of around 70 per cent of the pollution load going to Yamuna.

The DJB project will also include the commissioning of waste water intercepting sewer, which will be 59-km long, along three drains in Delhi — Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara. Through this project, sewage flowing in around 180 subsidiary drains will be intercepted and directed to the nearest Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), read an official DJB statement. This would ensure that “only treated sewage is discharged into major drains”, the DJB statement added.
