‘Entire room was covered in blood’: Woman, 6-month-old baby found killed at Delhi’s Majnu ka Tila

The woman was temporarily living with her friend and her family amid frequent fights with her partner, who lived nearby, said officers. The partner allegedly killed the woman and the child -- her friend's infant daughter

By the time the police arrived, the news had spread.

Everyone knew what had happened in the house where a young couple and their children had recently shifted. Curious onlookers gathered at the mouth of the narrow alleyway leading to the couple’s house, barely leaving any space for the police and forensic experts cordoning off the crime scene.

Everyone had a running theory on what happened, but mostly, the neighbours felt frightened.

“The entire room was covered in blood. My mother told me she got to know what had happened after she heard my sister-in-law scream for help and called the police,” recalled a family member of a six-month-old baby girl, who was killed at her house in Majnu Ka Tila on Tuesday. Also found dead at the house was a woman, her mother’s friend.

The suspect in the double murder, the woman’s former partner, is yet to be traced, said police. The woman was temporarily living with her friend and her family amid frequent fights with her partner, who lived nearby, said officers.

“The woman, who was from Uttarakhand, used to live in the same area with her partner, who is also from Uttarakhand.

She had issues with him and there were a lot of fights. So, she left him and started living with her friend, the baby girl’s mother,” said DCP (North) Raja Banthia.

The suspect allegedly targeted the woman and the baby when they were alone at the house. When the baby’s parents returned home Tuesday afternoon after picking up their daughter from school, they found the six-month-old and the woman dead at their home with their throats slit.

“The accused was aware of where and with whom the woman was staying. He also knew about the family’s day-to-day schedule. We suspect that he approached the woman, knowing she would be alone at home,” an officer said.

After the incident, police said, the suspect attempted to die by suicide at his house by trying to hang himself using a dupatta. However, he failed and decided to flee instead.

The police are examining CCTV camera footage from the area to determine where the suspect has fled.

One of the deceased woman’s family members, who was present at the Civil Lines police station, said, “The two of them got married secretly, and had a baby around a year ago. But they decided to give the child away since they couldn’t bear the responsibility.”

However, the cousin claimed, the suspect began regretting giving the child away around five-six months ago, and had frequent fights.

“Around 20-25 days ago, my cousin left her (partner) and began living with her elder sister in Khoda Colony after he got a tattoo of the baby’s footprint. He also began posting her and the baby’s pictures on social media regularly, which annoyed my cousin,” he said.

The woman’s mother and sister allegedly accompanied her to the police station, where she got the police to talk to the suspect and the posts were removed, said the family member. The woman later shifted to the friend’s house.

“They used to fight regularly after she moved into her friend’s house a few days ago,” he added.

Police said they are trying to corroborate the sequence of events that led up to the murder. They are yet to establish the exact motive behind the murder and are trying to determine what triggered the suspect to kill the child along with the woman.
