The North Corporation has begun impounding vehicles found parked illegally. During the checks, which are being conducted by the civic body with help from the Delhi Traffic police, 30 vehicles have been impounded.
Officials said while the corporation used to earlier collect fines for illegal parking, this is the first time the civic body has impounded vehicles. From June 27, officials said, 30 vehicles have been impounded and more than Rs 5 lakh has been collected in fines from contractors who were caught flouting norms. “Some parking attendants were fined for not being in uniform. Others were fined for parking vehicles outside the designated yellow marking,” North corporation spokesperson Yogendra Mann told Newsline.
While all three municipal corporations have turned their focus on illegal parking from time to time, this time the civic bodies have decided to crack the whip.
North Delhi Commissioner, Praveen Gupta, said the the decision to impound vehicles was taken because of increasing encroachment of land by unauthorised parking as well as over-charging by contractors. “We are allowed to impound vehicles under the DMC Act. The drive will continue,” Gupta said.
