Chaos over hundreds of IndiGo flights being delayed and canceled continued into Friday at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, with the airline’s domestic departures from the airport canceled until midnight.
In a post on its social media handle X on Friday morning, the Delhi Airport authority issued a passenger advisory stating that all Indigo domestic flights departing from Delhi Airport on Friday are cancelled till midnight.
it informed that “on-ground teams are working diligently with all partners to mitigate the disruption,” adding that operations for all other carriers remains the same.
Meanwhile, official sources of the authority said passengers flying with IndiGo who are already inside the terminal will be escorted outside.
“In such a situation, according to the protocol, the airline is responsible for escorting the passengers out of the terminal,” an official said, adding that the passengers should head back since there will be no flights till midnight.
“It is recommended that the passengers first confirm with the airlines and then come back to the airport,” the official said.
The primary reason for this disruption with the airline — India’s largest, accounting for over 60% of domestic passenger traffic — are crew shortages in the wake of the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms. The second and final phase of the new crew rest and duty rules was implemented last month, and IndiGo has been caught ill-prepared.
Only 19.7% of its flights operated on time on Wednesday (December 3), down from 35% on Tuesday and around 50% on Monday.
The airline on Thursday, on its X handle, had issued an apology. “The last two days have seen widespread disruption across IndiGo’s network and operations. We extend a heartfelt apology to all our customers and industry stakeholders who have been impacted by these events. IndiGo teams are working diligently and making all efforts with the support of MOCA, DGCA, BCAS, AAI and airport operators to reduce the cascading impact of these delays and restore normalcy,” it read.
