Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers and leaders gathered outside the party headquarters in New Delhi Thursday, protesting MP Sanjay Singh’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.
While the AAP workers had planned to march towards the BJP headquarters nearby, they were stopped by police barricades that were raised on Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg ahead of the protest. Some leaders and workers attempted to climb the barricades and later sat near them; they eventually retreated after the police began to drag a few protesters away from the barrier.
Around four to five AAP workers, who, police said tried to scuffle with the cops, were detained at the protest site and later released.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, meanwhile, said probing “false cases” against AAP leaders was a waste of time for the Centre and investigating agencies.
Referring to the observations of the Supreme Court on the bail application hearing of former deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the excise policy case, Kejriwal said, “The kind of questions that the Supreme Court asked — the matter is sub judice and I should not comment — it felt that they (agencies) have lodged a wrong case against us.”
The CM said, “All cases are false. They (agencies) keep investigating but nothing comes out of the probe… It’s a waste of time,” he said, referring to the case against Singh.
At the protest site, AAP national spokesperson Reena Gupta said, “After searching his (Sanjay Singh’s) house the whole day, they could not find one paisa. There is no evidence, there is nothing against Sanjay Singh. The only reason (he has been arrested) is that he has been the most vocal MP inside Parliament, raising the Adani scam. That is the reason he has been arrested.”
Addressing the AAP workers, minister Gopal Rai said, “You all know how, on the directions of the BJP and the prime minister, the ED raided Sanjay Singh’s house. Till evening, they searched his home but didn’t find anything. Why did they arrest him then? The journalists who are asking questions are being arrested. Then the TMC MPs were detained. Then, the ED raided Sanjay Singh’s house and he was arrested. This is only the beginning. I would like to tell the BJP that they will lose the Lok Sabha elections.”
At a press conference in the morning, Rai said that a new situation has arisen in the country since the formation of the INDIA bloc. “Ahead of the election, fear is being created that if anybody speaks against the government, they (the Centre) have the ED, CBI, police on their side. Even if they arrest all party netas, we will not bow down before them,” he said.
AAP minister Atishi told reporters at the protest, “The BJP is scared about losing the Lok Sabha elections. This is the fear of losing, which is why they use all sorts of weapons like the ED, CBI, and the police. The public is not foolish; they are watching. The people who oppose them (the BJP) are being jailed.”
AAP MLA Dilip Pandey told reporters at the protest, “This is fear ahead of the 2024 elections. There is no money trail, no proof. If the BJP has the ED and CBI on their side, the country’s people will unite against this.”
Protests and detentions were also seen in other cities and states, including Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bhopal, Gujarat, and Telangana.
