In a bid to strengthen family courts in the national capital and bring down pending cases, the Delhi government on Monday decided to elevate 10 judicial officers as principal judges. Now,each of the 11 family courts will be headed by a principal judge, while earlier there existed only one principal judge as head of all family courts.
The decision was announced after a meeting of the Delhi cabinet on Monday. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said,It was felt necessary to appoint one principal judge each in 11 family courts for the distribution of the business of the court among the judges. This will go a long way in making the functioning of family courts smoother and faster.
The number of districts in Delhi was increased from nine to 11 last year and government had decided to make available one family court in each district.
The cabinet also approved the draft of the Delhi Lifts and Escalators Bill,2013,which is meant to replace the Bombay Lifts Act,1939. With the installation of large number of lifts, escalators and walk ways there is a need of better periodical inspection, testing and certification of lifts and escalators. The Bombay Lifts Act,1939,as extended to NCT of Delhi needs to be replaced by a comprehensive and effective act of Delhi, Dikshit said.
