Over 9000 recoveries in Chengalpattu

Chengalpattu on Wednesday reported 540 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 13,841.

The district has 3,699 active cases while 9,900 people have recovered. 242 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district’s average number of cases from July 1 to July 17 is 215. There was an increase in cases from July 18 to July 23 leading to an average of 306. From July 24 to July 29, the number of cases have rocketed in the city with an average of 453.

Madurai tally crosses 10,000

Madurai on Wednesday reported 225 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 10,618.

The district has 2,392 active cases while 7,995 people have recovered. 231 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district saw an average of 291 cases from July 1 to July 11. From July 12 to 17, the district’s average increased to 350. After this, the district saw a slight drop in cases from July 18 to July 22 resulting in an average of 170. But in the last few days, from July 23 t0 July 29, the city’s average has gone up to 275 .

Cases in Salem spike over last few days

Salem on Wednesday reported 123 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 3428.

The district has 1088 active cases while 2313 people have recovered. 27 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district’s average number of cases from July 1 to July 23 is 78. But in the past few days, the district has seen a spike in the number of cases. Based on the cases recorded from July 24 to July 29, the district’s average has touched 139.

Tiruchirapalli tally close to 4000

Tiruchirapalli on Tuesday reported 136 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 3889.

The district has 1409 active cases while 2420 people have recovered from the disease. 60 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district saw an average of 55 cases from July 1 to July 9. From July 10 to July 20, the district’s average increased to 107. 172, being the average of cases from July 21 to July 29, the city’s Covid-19 cases are only increasing day-by-day.

Chennai sees drop in cases

Chennai on Wednesday reported 1117 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 97,575.

The district has 12,738 active cases while 82,764 people have recovered from the disease. 2073 people have succumbed to the disease.

Chennai saw an average of 1932 cases from July 1 to July 6. Whereas from July 7 to July 25 Chennai has seen a decline with the average of new Covid-19 positive cases being 1220. And cases have declined even further from July 26 to July 29 with an average of 1129. While Chennai has seen a drop, other districts in the state have reported spikes in numbers.

Tamil Nadu lockdown extended: Everything you need to know

The lockdown imposed in Tamil Nadu due to Covid-19 was Thursday extended for another month, till August 31, 2020. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami following a meeting with health experts and district collectors to take stock of the situation across the state.

Tamil Nadu, with 2,34,114 cases and 3,741 deaths as of Thursday, is the fourth most affected state in the country after Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The largest chunk of the cases comes from capital city Chennai, followed by Thiruvallur and Madurai.

The state is still seeing a rise in daily cases. For six consecutive days, till Wednesday, the state recorded over 6,000 cases of the disease. While the 7,000 mark is yet to be breached, numbers have hovered very close to it for several days.

E-commerce companies to ship all items

With the Tamil Nadu government having extended the lockdown till August 31 with relaxations, all e-commerce companies can ship both essential and non-essential items. Earlier, online purchases were restricted to essential commodities.

Further, grocery and other provisional stores, which were earlier allowed to function between 6 am and 6 pm, can now operate till 7 pm. Other shops that were allowed to operate between 10 am and 6 pm can now function till 7 pm.

Ban on luxury hotels and accomodations

The exiting ban on luxury hotels and accomodations at hotels across Tamil Nadu has been extended till August 31. Meanwhile, restaurants in Chennai can commence dine-in services from 6 am to 7 pm with 50 per cent capacity and no AC while food deliveries are permitted till 9 pm.

No relaxation in containment zones

With the government having extended the lockdown till August 31 with certain relaxations, there will be no relaxation in the restrictions in containment zones across Tamil Nadu. Curfew will be in effect for the next five Sundays in August while Section 144 will remain in force.

Tamil Nadu lockdown: Section 144 remains in place

The Tamil Nadu government has said more than five people cannot congregate in public places. Theatres, gyms, swimming pools and parks will remain closed until further orders. Schools and collegs, as well, will remain shut. Meanwhile, private industries will be allowed to operation with 75 per cent capacity.

Tamil Nadu lockdown extended: Shops to remain open till 7 pm

As part of the new order, shops and marketplaces will be allowed to remain open till 7 pm, as opposed to the earlier 6 pm rule. The government has also lifted restrictions on e-commerce products, allowing all vendors to sell goods online. Restaurants will be allowed to remain open till 7 pm, and home deliveries will be allowed till 9 pm. Restaurants can function with 50 per cent seating, and no air conditioners.

Tamil Nadu government to hold Independence Day celebrations on August 15

Independence Day celebrations will be held on August 15, the Tamil Nadu government said in a new order. However, norms, including wearing masks and social distancing, will be enforced to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The order comes days after the central government said it would allow August 15 celebrations, with minimum participation.

Tamil Nadu lockdown: Restrictions on transport

According to the new order issued by the Tamil Nadu government, here are the guidelines on transportation in the state: 

# It is still mandatory to obtain an e-pass to travel from one district to another

# Metro and electric train services will remain suspended until further orders

# The ban on bus transport will continue until further orders

# The existing operations of the Railways will remain in force

# The ban on international flights will remain in place, except for operations permitted by central government

Lockdown extended till August 31

Following a meeting with district collectors and health experts, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that the ongoing lockdown in the state has been extended till August 31. The CM added that a complete lockdown will be observed every Sunday. 

Further, the ongoing e-pass system which is used by private vehicles for inter district travel will be continued till August 31.

Madras HC orders postmortem to be conducted again on deceased Tenkasi farmer

The Madurai bench of Madras High Court has ordered re-postmortem to be conducted on deceased Tenkasi farmer Anaikarai Muthu.

Petitioner Palammal (60) had earlier sought a second postmortem for her husband.

Farmer Anaikarai Muthu was charged with putting electric fence illegally around his land which is just adjacent to his house in Vagaikulam, Tenkasi. On July 22, Anaikarai Muthu was interrogated by forest officials and was later taken to Kadayan GH where he was declared brought dead.

A case was filed on July 23 by Alwarkurichi police.

TN fatality rate at 1.6 per cent: CM

The expeditious measures taken by the Tamil Nadu government to contain the spread of coronavirus has helped reduce the Covid-19 fatality rate to 1.6 per cent in the state and enhance the recovery rate to 73 per cent, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu continues to maintain this unique distinction in the country in its battle against the virus, he said. He attributed it to aggressive detection and treating positive cases, while constantly upscaling facilities for the effective handling of the pandemic. Apart from conducting fever clinics for early detection and treatment of the cases both in Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu, the government has established 1,196 mobile camps throughout the state including 70 in Chennai to detect the virus cases.

“Chennai has a high recovery rate of 84.5 per cent while the rate of recovery for Tamil Nadu stood at 73 per cent. Chennai with 2,056 deaths has a fatality rate of 2.1 per cent. Tamil Nadu with 3,659 deaths has a death rate of 1.6 per cent,” Palaniswami said. EPS said house-to-house checking was being carried out to conduct RT-PCR tests. A total of 54,091 beds in Covid-19 hospitals, 64,903 beds in Covid-19 special hospitals and 25,538 beds with oxygen supply, 3,962 beds in ICUs and 2,882 ventilators were available in the state, he said.

Tamil Nadu recorded its highest single-day count for the seventh consecutive day with 6,426 fresh cases reported in the state on Wednesday, taking the state tally to 2,34,114. Among these, Chennai reported 1117 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 97,575.

TN records 6426 cases

Tamil Nadu recorded its highest single-day count for the seventh consecutive day with 6,426 fresh cases reported in the state on Wednesday, taking the state tally to 2,34,114. Among these, Chennai reported 1117 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 97,575.

Tamil Nadu recorded 82 deaths on Wednesday, putting the state toll at 3741. 75 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. As of Wednesday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 57,490. Till date, 1,42,055 males, 92,032 females and 27 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.

According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 25,36,660 samples from the state have been sent for testing till date, with 60,794 samples having been sent today.

The state discharged 5927 patients following treatment today, putting the total number of recoveries at 1,72,883.

The district has 2,882 active cases while 7,882 people have recovered. 222 people have succumbed to the disease. The district saw an average of 291 cases from July 1 to July 11. From July 12 to 17, the district’s average increased to 350. After this, the district saw a slight drop in cases from July 18 to July 22 resulting in an average of 170. But in the last few days, from July 23 t0 July 28, the city’s average has gone up to 284.

COVID-19 average in Coimbatore is 250

Coimbatore district reported 278 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases to 4052.

The district has 1581 active cases while 2427 people have recovered from the disease. 44 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district saw an average of 60 cases from July 4 to July 11. From July 12 to July 22, the district has seen an average of 125 cases. But the spike in cases is even higher now with 250 being the district’s average from July 23 to July 28.

Tiruchirappali on Tuesday reported 149 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 3755.

The district has 1398 active cases while 2,297 people have recovered from the disease. 60 people have succumbed to the disease.

The district saw an average of 55 cases from July 1 to July 9. From July 10 to July 20, the district’s average increased to 107. 176, being the average of cases from July 21 to July 28, the city’s Covid-19 cases are only increasing day-by-day.

Stalin seeks support of top national leaders on OBC reservation

DMK chief M K Stalin on Wednesday called upon the country's top political leaders including Congress President Sonia Gandhi and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, seeking their cooperation in "exerting pressure" on the Centre to provide OBC reservation in medical admissions. Stalin also spoke to non-BJP, non-Congress Chief Ministers, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of Andhra Pradesh and K Chandrasekhar Rao of Telangana, besides their Maharashtra and West Bengal counterparts Uddhav Thackeray and Mamata Banerjee, respectively, a party release said.

The Madras High Court had on Monday directed the Central government to constitute a committee to decide on the issue of providing OBC reservation in all-India seats (AIQ) surrendered by Tamil Nadu for medical admission.

In a tweet, Stalin said he had spoken to the leaders after the High Court's "historical judgment," seeking their support to "urge the Centre to convene a committee meeting on priority, include OBC reservation in state contributed medical seats to AIQ (All India Quota) and uphold state reservation
laws."

He also spoke to CPI General Secretary D Raja, former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BSP supremo Mayawati, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and NC leader Omar Abdullah.

Govt to implement biometric system ahead of One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

The Tamil Nadu government will implement the biometric system at its fair price shops across the state before getting on board the Centre's "One Nation-One Ration Card" scheme, state food and civil supplies minister R Kamaraj said. The biometric system would be launched a month before the implementation of the central scheme, he noted.

Kamaraj said that the procurement of biometric devices and its integration with PoS (Point of Sale) devices used at ration shops is in advance stage of approval. Speaking to reporters after inspecting a COVID-19 medical camp at Pondi Bazaar in Kodambakkam Zone, the minister said all the employees at the ration shops across Tamil Nadu were being screened for coronavirus once in 14 days.

Anna University releases list of recognised engineering colleges

Anna University has released the list of recognized engineering colleges for the academic year 2020-21.

Recognized colleges in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai and Thirunelveli have been named in the list, along with the number of seats available in each college. The data of number of students admitted in engineering colleges last academic year (2019-2020) can also be found in the list.

Colleges that have applied for recognition but are not on the list will be given recognition if necessary documents are provided before August 15.

3 more persons test positive at Raj Bhavan

Three more people have tested positive for COVID-19 at Raj Bhavan, taking the total number of Raj Bhavan staff who have tested positive to 87. A total of 84 personnel working at Raj Bhavan in Chennai had tested positive for novel coronavirus last week. According to a statement released by Raj Bhavan, tests were carried out on a total of 147 people after a few persons showed symptoms for the virus.

Following this, 38 people had been tested for the virus, with 35 of them testing negative and three testing positive.

A statement released by Raj Bhavan today said that Governor Banwarilal Purohit has tested negative but has been advised to observe seven-day isolation by his doctor.

Tangedco has announced a powercut in parts of Chennai today from 9 am to 2 pm to carry out maintenance work.

Tamil Nadu recorded its highest single-day count for the sixth consecutive day with 6,972 fresh cases reported in the state on Tuesday, taking the tally to 2,27,688. Among these, Chennai reported 1107 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 96,438.

Close to 7000 cases recorded on Tuesday

Tamil Nadu recorded its highest single-day count for the sixth consecutive day with 6,972 fresh cases reported in the state on Tuesday. With this, the state Covid-19 tally has risen to 2,27,688. Among these, Chennai reported 1107 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 96,438.

Tamil Nadu recorded 88 deaths on Tuesday, putting the state toll at 3659. 85 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. As of Tuesday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 57,073. Till date, 1,38,163 males, 89,502 females and 23 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.

According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 24,75,866 samples from the state have been sent for testing till date, with 61,153 samples having been sent today.

The state discharged 4,707 patients following treatment Tuesday, putting the total number of recoveries at 1,66,956.

A total of 54,091 beds in Covid-19 hospitals, 64,903 beds in Covid-19 special hospitals and 25,538 beds with oxygen supply, 3,962 beds in ICUs and 2,882 ventilators were available in the state, he said.
