A 35-year old woman met with a tragic end early Friday as a wild elephant trampled her to death in this high range district of Kerala. While the woman died on the spot, her husband had a narrow escape with injuries, police said.
Both of them were tea plantation labourers who were said to be on the way from neighbouring Tamil Nadu after seeing their relatives there, they said.
The deceased woman, identified as Viji, was attacked by the jumbo while riding pillion with her husband Kumar, through a forest-fringe road in the Kerala -Tamil Nadu border near Anayirankal, over 20 kms away from famed tourist town Munnar.
Frightened to see the wild elephant in the middle of the road in the early morning, her husband tried to turn the bike but lost control over the vehicle and both of them fell down. Before they could even stand up, the jumbo trampled Viji as her husband could only remain a mute spectator. He later ran away to safety as the animal came after him, police said.
The woman's body was later shifted to the mortuary of the nearby taluk hospital, where her husband was admitted for treatment. (PTI)

CSK have a game in hand and are set to return to the top of the table with a win. RCB, still 3rd on the points table, suffered a convincing defeat in their last match, and will be looking to arrest the slide.
There are a few problems for RCB at the outset of the match — they suffered a batting implosion in their last match, they have a track record of losing momentum fast and the added pressure on skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli is not usually affected by defeats as India captain, but the demands of franchise cricket means that permutations and combinations need to be done to the playing XI.
CSK, on the other hand, would be in a buoyant mood. It was thought the seam-friendly pitches in the UAE would bog them down and they would be like ducks out of water outside the Chepauk. That had been proved wrong. It was also thought when they suffered a top-order collapse in their last match that they would lose. That was also proved wrong.

In addition to the recovery of money equivalent to the value of minerals quarried by unauthorised miners, appropriate penalties should also be levied on them, the Madras High Court held on Thursday.
"It will not do for the State to be satisfied with the illegal or impermissible mining activities being stopped. Any person who has indulged in illegal mining, where illegal mining would be when one operates without a licence or in excess of the terms granted by the licence, the person has to be made to pay," the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P D Audikesavalu said.
The State must assess the extent of illegal quarrying indulged in by a person and recover the money equivalent thereof together with the imposition of penalty.
"Unless a sense of fear is instilled in persons indulging in wanton illegal mining across the State, this malady may never be arrested," it said and requested the state government to use its machinery to come down heavily on illegal miners upon following the procedure established by law. (PTI)

Poet and filmmaker Leena Manimekalai has moved the Madras High Court for a direction to the Regional Passport Officer to return her impounded passport. Justice R Mahadevan, before whom the writ petition came up for hearing on Thursday, ordered notice returnable by two weeks.
According to Manimekalai, one Susi Ganeshan had preferred a private complaint against her for an offence under Sec. 500 of the IPC (defamation) and it was pending before the IX Metropolitan Magistrate in Saidapet.
Pending the same, Ganeshan, himself a film director against whom she had levelled sexual harassment charges during the 'MeToo' episode, also preferred a petition to impound her travel documents. However, the Magistrate closed the petition in November, 2020 which was also confirmed by the High Court in January this year.
While so, based on another petition from Ganeshan, the Magistrate reopened the case in August this year and passed an order directing the Passport Authority to proceed against the petitioner as per Sec. 10(3) of the Passport Act, on September 6.
She contended that reopening the same case by the Magistrate and reviewing her own order was arbitrary, illegal and against the prevailing law in force. And by an order dated September 9, the passport authority impounded her passport, the petitioner further contended. Hence, the present petition. (PTI)
