A day after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party National President J P Nadda, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) said Thursday they have no issue with BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai and it was only the media which projects that there is a difference between them.
Edappadi along with senior AIADMK leaders including CV Shanmugam, SP Velumani, D Jayakumar, P Thangamani, and K P Munusamy met Amit Shah and J P Nadda at the Union minister’s residence in Delhi on Wednesday night. During the meeting between the leaders of the alliance, Annamalai was also present.
The meeting is being seen as an effort by Shah to broker peace between the two parties whose leaders had been making remarks against each other. Before this, Edappadi had asked reporters not to ask him about Annamalai, saying he wanted to speak only about mature politicians.
Commenting on the alleged rift between him and Annamalai, EPS blamed the media for creating an illusion and claimed that he told them not to ask about Annamalai as the reporters had posed questions with an ulterior motive.
“We don’t have any issues with the Tamil Nadu BJP leader. If it had been the case, how would he have agreed to campaign in the Erode poll? You (the media) are asking questions to create confusion, and a possible rift between the AIADMK and BJP. In an alliance, all the parties will look to strengthen their own. All the parties in our alliance function independently. It’s not like the DMK where the alliance parties have to agree to whatever they say,” Edappadi told reporters.
When asked about the status of their alliance, Edappadi said there is still a year left for the 2024 Lok Sabha election and added that they were part of the NDA in the 2019 parliamentary polls and it continued for the 2021 Assembly polls as well as the Erode by-poll. And it has been continuing now as well, the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly pointed out.
He added each party in their alliance has its own ideology and they function accordingly, and when it comes to the alliance all of them will function unitedly and work hard to make their candidates emerge victorious.
Edappadi also said they discussed the various corruption allegations placed against the ruling government which includes the audio tape issue involving finance minister Palanivel Thiagarajan.
