One can find a cardboard lined with two rows of black and white photos near his shop. These photos are part of his over 30,000 photo collections. To commemorate birth and death anniversaries of famous personalities, and historically significant events, Anand exhibits these photos in front of his shop.

The Centre has taken steps to provide 4G mobile services soon to about 534 uncovered villages in remote and difficult terrains, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said on Saturday. The move is part of the nationwide project to provide 4G mobile services in 24,680 uncovered villages at a cost of Rs 26,316 crore.
Speaking to reporters here, Murugan said under this programme the infrastructure of BSNL will be improved and marketing network will be strengthened. “Both BSNL and MTNL are on a growth path and are providing new connections every day,” he said. Read more
The Madras High Court has refused advance bail to the managing director, directors and other officials of Aarudhra Gold Trading Private Limited here, who anticipated arrest on the charge of cheating their depositors of several thousand crores of rupees. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan, who refused advance bail on July 29, also directed the authorities concerned to issue a 'Look Out Notice' against the accused, who were said to have left the country.
"In the case on hand, the petitioners are charged with economic offences of huge magnitude. This Court is also conscious of the fact that the offences alleged, if proved, may jeopardise the economy of the country. That apart the investigation is not yet completed and if the petitioners are granted anticipatory bail, there is a possibility that they will tamper with the witnesses and hamper the investigation. Hence, this Court is not inclined to grant anticipatory bail to the petitioners in all the petitions," the judge said, while dismissing the bail applications and allowing the petitions from the intervenors (depositors). Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu Sunday presented the Tamil Nadu police with the prestigious President’s Colour in Chennai. The President’s Colour is the highest honour given to the military, paramilitary and police forces of States and Union Territories. The State police will be the first in Southern India and among 10 others in the country to showcase the honour. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin was also present during the occasion.
About 170 cadets were commissioned into the Indian Army at the end of a passing out parade at the Officer's Training Academy (OTA) here on Saturday. Major General Abdulla Shamaal, Chief of Defence Forces, Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF), the Chief Guest, presented the Sword of Honour and medals to the meritorious candidates, a Defence (PIB) release said.
"A total of 125 Gentlemen Cadets and 41 Women Cadets got commissioned in various Arms and Services of Indian Army. Four Gentlemen Cadets and 26 Women Cadets from Friendly Foreign Countries also successfully completed their training," it said. Major General Shamaal complimented the officer cadets and staff of the OTA on the excellent all round standards achieved. He exhorted the cadets of the passing out courses to always adhere to the core military values of 'Selfless Service to the Nation' and strive for excellence in all their endeavours, it said. (PTI)
The Madras High Court has directed the CB-CID to register a murder case against certain police officers attached to ICF police station here and proceed against them in accordance with law and file the final report within eight weeks. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan, who gave the direction, also directed the state government to pay an interim compensation of 5 lakh to the dependents of the deceased within four weeks. This shall be recovered from the accused persons in the manner known to law, the judge added.

The work to upgrade the Arignar Anna Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Kancheepuram near here, as India’s premier research institute for cancer treatment and research, is progressing briskly and it would be completed in a year’s time, Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian said on Saturday. The Rs 300 crore project, was among the numerous initiatives of Chief Minister M K Stalin in the health sector and this centre would serve the patients not only in Tamil Nadu but also those in other parts of the country, he said. Those trying to “impose” one language, one faith and one culture were the country’s “enemies,” and there was no place for such “evil forces,” he said. Stalin was virtually addressing the “India @75 Manorama News Conclave 2022” in Kerala’s Thrissur from Chennai, where he expressed concern over the recent suspension of 27 Parliamentarians, saying the right to express was being denied.

IIT Madras on Sunday released a statement stating there was a sexual assault on a student in campus. The statement by the institute also read that inquiries were underway. The release by the institute mentioned that the incident happened on midnight of Sunday/ early Monday morning (24-25th July 2022), which was reported to the Institute after two days by a friend of the student. The Institute immediately began the investigation, screened camera footage and shared pictures of almost 300 people, who matched the description given by the student. However, she is yet to positively identify anyone.The gates of IIT Madras are adequately secured and at every 100 meters there's a Security Guard posted.

In a relief to foreign medical graduates (FMG) from Tamil Nadu, the State government on Friday announced a cut in fee to do compulsory rotatory residential internship (CRRI).
The medicos could now pay Rs 30,000 instead of Rs 5.20 lakh, said State Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian. “This was decided at a meeting with Chief Minister M K Stalin who took a considerate view of the plight of the medicos who faced difficulties in pursuing internship in the State,” he said. THE SUPREME Court on Friday asked the Madras High Court to decide afresh former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader O Paneerselvam’s (OPS) plea against the July 11 general council meeting of the party wherein he was expelled.
A bench of Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli asked the High Court to decide the matter in three weeks during which it said the two rival faction led by OPS and Edappadi K Palaniswamy (EPS), who was elected interim general secretary of the party, should maintain status quo. Deposed leader O Panneerselvam on Friday exuded confidence that ‘Dharma will triumph’ in his ongoing legal battle with Edappadi K Palaniswami, the AIADMK’s interim general secretary.
After seeing off Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport here, Panneerselvam told reporters that the former enquired about his health and he replied that he is doing well. Popularly known as OPS, Panneerselvam is leading the rebel AIADMK camp and he was recently treated for coronavirus.
Tamil Nadu continued to maintain a downward graph in Covid-19 cases by recording 1,624 new positive cases on Friday, taking the overall tally to 35,41,231 infections. The State witnessed 1,712 fresh Covid-19 cases a day ago.
The number of active cases also dropped to 13,510 today from 13,890 on Thursday. There was no deaths. The toll remained at 38,032. A lone traveller from Jharkhand tested positive for the contagion and was among the 1,624 new cases, said a bulletin from the State Health Department.
About 2,004 patients were discharged during the day and the net recoveries mounted to 34,89,689. Chennai accounted for 353 fresh cases followed by Chengalpattu 171 and Coimbatore with 159. (PTI)
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has announced that power will be suspended in parts of Chennai today in T Nagar, KK Nagar, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Porur, Tondiarpet, Avadi, Ponneri carrying out maintenance work in the city. Parts of Chennai will face a power shutdown from 9 am to 2 pm, with supply expected to resume before 2 pm if the work is completed. Read more
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin Friday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take measures to conduct the 2024 Asian Beach Games in Chennai. In a letter, Stalin urged Modi to direct the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to provide Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) the requisite guarantees to host the games in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also thanked PM Modi for participating in the inaugural event of the 44th International Chess Olympiad and providing all possible support to host the event in the city. He further appreciated the latter’s interest in encouraging sports activities and sought his co-operation in organising the event here.
