Chennai Metro launches digital QR-based tickets, PhonePe to host facility

According to officials, passengers will now be able to book digital QR-based tickets directly from PhonePe’s Switch platform.

People can now avoid long queues at the ticket counters of the Chennai Metro stations with the authorities launching digital QR-based tickets. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has partnered with PhonePe for the purpose.

According to officials, passengers will now be able to book digital QR-based tickets directly from PhonePe’s Switch platform. This service will also carry the existing 20 per cent discount.

CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique launched the QR-based ticketing system Friday at Nandanam. It was noted that PhonePe will enable three key services for commuters in phases — booking of single journey tickets, return journey tickets and recharge of smart cards.

As of now, in the first phase, booking of single journey tickets has been enabled and the other two services are set to be enabled soon.

Along with its partnership with Chennai Metro, PhonePe has also collaborated with Hyderabad Metro, Mumbai Metro and Delhi Metro.

Commuters can get e-tickets for up to six people at the same time from a single device and can start their journey by scanning it at the entry and exit gates of Metro stations.

How to book tickets on PhonePe

1. Open the PhonePe app and go to the Switch section

2. Under the Taxi & Metro category, select the Chennai Metro icon

3. Enter the origin and destination stations and the number of passengers

4. Make the payment via UPI

5. Upon successful payment, a digital QR code will be generated within the PhonePe app itself which needs to be scanned at the entry and exit gates of the Metro stations to complete the journey

As per data issued by the CMRL, a total of 9,34,882 passengers have utilised the WhatsApp QR code ticketing system between May 17, 2023, and November 15, 2023.

Further, as many as 9,26,301 passengers have utilised the Paytm QR Code ticketing system between August 4, 2023 and November 15, 2023.
