Union Minister and Haryana’s former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar Thursday met the family members of Rohtak police’s cyber cell ASI Sandeep Kumar Lathar, who allegedly died by suicide earlier this week.
Khattar assured the family members that the government would bear the educational expenses of his children and that his wife would be provided a government job. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also said he would discuss the matter with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
“Both these incidents – Y Puran Kumar’s alleged suicide and ASI Sandeep Kumar’s alleged suicide – are very unfortunate. When the first incident took place, some political parties tried to give it a political colour and a casteist colour that was incorrect. I want to appeal to all sections of society to maintain peace and harmony. Law will take its own course,” Khattar told reporters.
“Whatever the reasons could have been for both these incidents, fair investigations will be conducted. [ASI’s] family had been demanding that one of the family members should be given a government job, and the chief minister has agreed on that. His children’s education expenses shall also be taken care of. Also, if there are any issues with giving them more benefits later, those shall be considered as per the rules and regulations,” he added.
Khattar’s visit to the family comes a day after Haryana CM Saini met them, and said the government will “thoroughly investigate the reasons that forced him to take this extreme step”.
On Wednesday, the Rohtak police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on a “final note” construed as a “suicide note”, and a 6.28-minute video left behind by Sandeep Kumar before allegedly dying by suicide on October 14, seven days after IPS officer Y Puran Singh was found dead with a gunshot wound.
His wife also submitted a complaint to the Rohtak police, seeking action against all those named in the “final note”.
After an initial standoff with the Rohtak police, Sandeep Kumar’s family agreed to get the postmortem examination. Late Wednesday, his body was shifted to Rohtak’s PGIMS, and the postmortem examination commenced Thursday morning.
His family will perform his last rites at his native village in Julana in the Jind district of Haryana in the afternoon. In view of the sensitive situation, the police have made elaborate arrangements in the area.
ASI Sandeep Kumar is survived by his wife, Santosh, and three children, including two daughters and a son.
