The Punjab government on Monday ordered closure of all schools till July 13 in view of the incessant rainfall in the state.

Earlier in the day, Punjab University declared a holiday in all affiliated colleges, and the Ludhiana district administration also announced closure of all schools and other educational institutions on July 10 (Monday).

For the first time, Chandigarh administration has advised public/private offices to consider closing down temporarily.

Heavy showers continue to lash Punjab, with civic administrations of Patiala and Jalandhar, and Ambala in Haryana seeking the aid of the Indian Army in flood relief operations. On Monday, the Ropar district was submerged under rainwater, with instances of flooding being reported in several villages.

As a precautionary measure, Gujjars living on the banks of river Sutlej at Sidhwan were rescued and shifted in presence of ADC Jagraon Amit Sareen.

Meanwhile, the Ludhiana district administration and Municipal Corporation were on toes Sunday for a second consecutive day. Fearing a flood-like situation, the administration appealed to people to be alert and avoid travel unless unavoidable.

Punjab’s neighbouring states including Delhi, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have also announced closure of schools amid what is the wettest July in recent history. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier said that all heads of schools have been sent a notice regarding closure of schools.
