The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday questioned the UT Administration over the long-pending relocation of the city’s wholesale vegetable market from Sector 26 to Sector 39, noting repeated delays despite prior directions.
During the hearing, counsel for the administration informed the court that a reply had been filed in the registry on Monday regarding the matter but had not yet been listed due to certain objections. “It was filed at 11:41 am yesterday. I have the receipt as well,” the lawyer told the Bench, assuring that the reply would be placed on record next week.
The court was told that a case is pending in the Supreme Court. The counsel said the apex court is involved in related proceedings concerning the mandi’s relocation and observed that the matter has been pending despite earlier orders.
Responding to the Bench’s query on why the Sector 26 mandi continued to remain congested and poorly managed, the counsel said the administration had adopted a “three-pronged approach”. This comprised pursuing all pending cases before both the High Court and Supreme Court, tackling illegal encroachments by vendors, and operationalising the Sector 39 facility.
The lawyer submitted that new by-laws had been notified on August 7, 2025, empowering the Mandi Board to impose fines on illegal vendors. “A drive will begin tomorrow itself to address the problem,” he added.
The court, however, directed the UT to ensure that its reply is properly placed on record and to report back on the steps taken by the next date of hearing, August 28.
