A police team has questioned Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa about his claim, made in a TV interview, that 50 hand grenades had entered the state and that 18 were used in blasts while 32 remained unaccounted for.
AIG Intelligence Ravjot Grewal and Mohali SP (City) Harbir Atwal questioned Bajwa at his Chandigarh home to determine the source of the information. After questioning Bajwa, however, the police officers told reporters that they did not get satisfactory answers.
“The statement made by Partap Bajwa was a very sensational statement and we needed to question him over it,” said Grewal.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also asked how Bajwa had got information about the number of grenades and whether he was in touch with elements in Pakistan.
Mann said the state as well as central intelligence has no information about the number of grenades to be used in future attacks. If Bajwa has made the statement to spread terror and unrest in Punjab, strict action will be taken against him, the chief minister said, adding that he had given instructions for the police to that effect.
For his part, Bajwa said in a statement, “I want to tell all Punjab that I hold a constitutional post of LoP and my primary task holding that position is to aid the government. We have seen bad events in the past in Punjab. My sources gave me information that there are 50 bombs in Punjab, 18 have been used. My sources are in Punjab, in the state government and in central agencies too. They told me that the situation is worsening and they wanted to warn me because my family too is a victim of terrorism. I also faced a terrorist attack in Batala in those days of terrorism. I have heard a statement of Bhagwant Mann. I was also called by a top police officer who asked me if some officers could be sent to ask me for my statement. They asked me for the source of my information and I told them I cannot reveal my source”.
State Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring defended Bajwa. “What is wrong about what Partap Bajwa has said? He has just said that blasts are taking place and more will take place. Why did Punjab Police intelligence not prevent attacks,” he said.
