The region’s lone tertiary care institute,PGIMER has received a wake-up call by a study conducted by a panel of doctors. The institute score poorly according to the standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for tertiary care hospitals.

As per a study conducted by the doctors of the department of Community Medicine,PGI,comparing two other tertiary care hospitals of the country,JawaharLal Institute of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (JIPMER),Puducherry and Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI),Lucknow,it has concluded that based on the parameters of Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH),PGIMER scores significantly lower (35/80) than that of the other two hospitals.

SGPGI scored 68 on a scale of 80,JIPMER scored 54.

The study conducted by Dr Sonu Goel,Dr A K Gupta,Dr Parampreet,Dr Bindya,Dr Puneet Bains,Dr Sonika Goel and Dr Amarjeet Singh, stated that there was no formal HPH policy in PGIMER and that PGI should frame an HPH policy. Further,one-third of the patients interviewed were not satisfied with the overall preventive and health-promoting services of PGIMER.

The study which was recently published in National Medical Journal of India assessed the three tertiary care hospitals on the bases of five parameters of Health Promoting Hospitals orientation as per the WHO standards.

After the study was concluded, the WHO sanctioned a project on similar lines to PGI on how Nehru Hospital, which is the oldest functioning hospital in PGI,could be transformed into a Health-Promoting Hospital (HPH).

As part of the project,Rs 8 lakh have been sanctioned to PGI for a year to conduct workshops with all those who can help in making Nehru Hospital a Health Promoting Hospital.
