THE THINK Tank of Panjab University has recommended a fee hike of 20 per cent for students from the next academic session, starting from July 2016. The proposal will be tabled before the PU Syndicate at a meeting on July 22.

The Think Tank also suggested setting up of two separate committees to deliberate on ways to increase tuition and examination fees and ensuring that it is affordable for the students. The committees will then devise methods to increase the fees taking into consideration the fee structures of other universities of neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

The Vice-Chancellor said that there should be no fee hike for students of economically weaker sections.

The fee hike will be implemented in phases, beginning from the next session in which the fees will be hiked by 20 per cent and by 25 per cent in the 2017- 2018 session. The base fee structure to be used for the year will be of the academic session 2015- 2016.

A representative from the UGC should also be invited to attend the meeting of Board of Finance to oversee the financial requirements of the university as well as sources of income to meet the requirement, said members of the Think Tank.
