Amid growing concerns of safety in the city and several newspaper reports,a fresh robbery bid was made at a jewellery story late Wednesday night at Sector 17 in Chandigarh.

The incident occurred around 1.45 am when Vinod Kapoor, owner of Tanishq Jewellery,a showroom, was preparing to down shutters. One of the security guards had kept a bag full of keys (of the inside lockers and windows) on a chair outside the showroom when two unidentified youths came from behind, picked up the bag and started to run. When one of the security guards resisted, the robbers reportedly fired two gunshots on the floor. One of the bullets ricocheted and hit Santosh,an attendant at the showroom. She was rushed to the GMSH-16 and was discharged at 5 am after her wounds were nursed. She sustained five stitches in her right leg. The robbers escaped in a silver-colour car, which was parked on the other side of the road. The police have registered a case of robbery under Section 394 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 of the Arms Act.

“After finishing our meal,we counted the stock and were closing down the showroom when a youth came from behind and fled with the bag. Thankfully, there was no money or jewellery in the bag but just the keys of the interiors of the showroom,” said Vinod Kapoor, owner of the showroom, adding that he suspects no insider role in the plot. When asked if he suspected the role of an insider in the attempt,Kapoor replied in the negative. No arrests have been made in the case yet.

Meanwhile, when Newsline asked if the city had become unsafe keeping in view the rising incidents of robbery and snatchings,Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh said,“Chandigarh is one of the safest cities with a very low crime rate”.

He added: “We are trying to bring down the crime graph. We are registering every incident of crime rather than hiding it. The incidents of snatching, when compared to last year. There are similarities in the last two robberies with the accused having the same modus operandi. We are working on the case and will arrest them soon.”
