Two days after 45-year-old businessman Rajdeep Singh, who operated an immigration firm, died by suicide inside the washroom of an HDFC Bank branch, the police Thursday booked a senior Punjab Police officer, an ASI and others.
Just before taking the step, the victim recorded a video message accusing senior Punjab Police officer, AIG Gurjot Singh Kaler, and others of harassment. The victim also left a note mentioning unpaid dues of ₹40 lakh.
The police registered an FIR against Kaler, ASI Rishi Rana, CA Sunil Aggarwal, caterer Rinku Krishna, and Saina Arora on charges of abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy. Rajdeep’s father alleged police humiliation, loan pressure, and financial harassment.
Confirming the developments, DSP (City-2) Harsimrat Singh Bal stated, “Raids are being conducted at various places to nab AIG Gurjot Singh Kaler and others.”
AIG Kaler is one of Punjab Police’s most recognised officers, known for his policing career as well as his pursuits as a writer, singer, mountaineer, and social worker.
Born in Chandigarh, he holds master’s degrees in Psychology, Police Administration, and Development & Security from universities in India and the UK. After clearing the Punjab Civil Services in 2012, he joined as DSP and served in the Cyber Cell, Intelligence Wing, and Organised Crime Control Unit.
Kaler has also trained with premier police agencies, including the FBI, RCMP, and Singapore Police. Beyond policing, he earned praise for community initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic, including free taxi service for the elderly and anti-drug awareness campaigns. He has received several honours, including the State Policing Award and FICCI Smart Policing Award, and authored books and songs dedicated to farmers and soldiers.
