Mohali gets Rs 728-crore power outage reduction plan; MLA Kulwant Singh hails it as ‘a transformative step’

MLA Kulwant Singh launched the Rs 728-crore power outage reduction plan for SAS Nagar district on Wednesday at the 66 KV grid substation in IT City, Mohali, where a 31.5 MVA power transformer was also inaugurated under Punjab’s Rs 5,000-crore power infrastructure reform.
Speaking at the launch, the SAS Nagar MLA said the investment “marks a transformative step towards uninterrupted, high-quality power supply” for domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers in Mohali.
“This project will not only enhance voltage stability but also improve service delivery across the district,” Kulwant Singh added.
The district-level works under the plan include feeder de-loading worth Rs 172.2 crore, installation of new distribution transformers worth Rs 35.5 crore, augmentation of existing transformers costing Rs 32.6 crore, and the construction of new 66 KV and 220 KV substations worth Rs 354.2 crore. Power transformer upgrades of Rs 62.9 crore and line strengthening works costing Rs 70.6 crore are also underway, according to officials.
The statewide virtual launch of the initiative was led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal, convener of the ruling AAP.
Kulwant Singh said that under the project, several new 11 KV feeders, including Jubilee Clio, TDI-2, Civil Hospital, Punjab Officers Society, and Aerovista, have been commissioned, easing load on existing feeders and improving supply quality.
Fourteen new grid substations are being established across Mohali, including at Sector 62, Sector 110, Sector 119, Medicity, Aerocity-2, Eco City-1, Sector 123, and Mubarikpur, among others, the MLA said.
He expressed confidence that these works “will redefine Mohali’s power infrastructure with reliable, efficient, and future-ready energy systems”.
Meanwhile, Mohali has been designated as the east zone headquarters of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, with a chief engineer now overseeing operations from Nangal to Lalru, ensuring better supervision and timely project execution.
