An associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Timber Market in Sector 26, Chandigarh on Monday evening.

The deceased, identified as Inderpreet Singh, 35, alias Parry, was found inside a car and was rushed to PGIMER, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries.

After the incident, a post on Facebook went viral, in which one Aarzoo Bishnoi claimed responsibility of the murder.

Sharing the details, IG Chandigarh Police Pushpendra Kumar said, “We received a call about a firing incident near Timber Market at around 6 pm. The police team reached the spot and found the victim in the car. He was taken to PGIMER, but he could not survive”.

He added that prima facie, the assailants appeared to be known to Parry, who had around a dozen criminal cases registered against him. CCTV footage from the area was being examined to identify the shooters and trace the victim’s movement prior to the attack. “We are tracing the assailants. An FIR for murder has been registered,” the IG said.

Police said that around 9-10 rounds of bullets were fired by the assailants — two on Parry’s Kia Seltos car windshield. The assailants who were reportedly in a compact SUV escaped after the incident.

According to police sources, he recently got married on November 13.

Sources later said that a known of Parry, who is suspected to be sitting beside him in the car was part of the conspiracy with the assailants, who came in a white (Creta) car. The co-passenger in Parry’s car also fired at him before escaping. However, sources added that they are still probing this theory more.

Was jailed with Lawrence

Former SOPU leader, he had gone to jail with Lawrence 14 years ago. Over the past decade, the 35-year-old Sector-33 resident had repeatedly figured in extortion, arms recovery, and assault cases investigated by both Chandigarh and Punjab Police.

According to police sources, Parry had several criminal cases lodged against him in Punjab and Chandigarh. In Chandigarh, he was facing trial in a 14-year-old assault case.

Fourteen years ago, he had been jailed along with Bishnoi. As per police records, Bishnoi, Parry and their associates had forcibly entered a house in Sector 40 and assaulted a man, leading to the registration of a case.

The trial in the matter is still underway, with Bishnoi also named as an accused.

The case pertains to June 28, 2011, when complainant Harpreet Singh Grewal reported that around 8.45 pm, Lawrence and five accomplices — armed with a pistol and swords — stormed into his house and attacked him and his friends, leaving them injured. The accused allegedly threatened to kill them before fleeing.

Police later arrested several of the accused, including Parry. Bishnoi was arrested on July 30, 2011, and a charge-sheet was filed in April 2012 in the Chandigarh District Court.

Accused of assault, extortion

Parry’s run-ins with law enforcement were frequent. He had been arrested by the Punjab Police from a hotel in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh, in the past, and was picked up by the UT Police in March 2022 for allegedly making extortion calls to businessmen and owners of clubs and hotels in the Tricity.

A former student of DAV College, Sector 10, Parry is believed to have entered the world of organised crime during his graduation days along with Bishnoi, who was his classmate at the time. Their association strengthened into a criminal partnership, with both being named in several cases.

During a 2022 crackdown on the Bishnoi gang’s extortion network, the Chandigarh Police’s Operations Cell arrested Parry from his Sector-33 residence. Police had then seized a pistol and 10 live cartridges from him. His interrogation later led to the recovery of a Glock pistol with 10 cartridges and a US-made rifle also carrying 10 cartridges. However, he was released on bail a few months after his arrest.

In July 2017, he was arrested along with gangster Bharat Bhushan, alias Bhola Shooter, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000, from Sector 63. Bhola Shooter had allegedly murdered Lavi Deora of the Vicky Gounder gang in Kotkapura
