INSO, PUSU shine in city colleges

It was only in DAV College, Sector 10, where the NSUI led-alliance emerged victorious on all the four posts.

As the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) strengthened its grip by bagging three of the four posts of Panjab University’s students’ council against two last year, it was the Indian National Students’ Organisation (INSO), and Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) which collectively bagged the maximum number of posts in colleges across city.

INSO, which is the youth wing of the Indian National Lok Dal, in alliance with other students’ organisations, won all four seats of the college councils in four city colleges.

In two of these colleges, INSO had made an alliance with PUSU while in the other two, it was with the Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) which is the youth wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

At GGDSD College, Sector 32, the alliance of PUSU-INSO-SOI won all four posts, defeating the NSUI-led alliance with SD College Union and the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University(SOPU). The most gripping fight was witnessed for the post of secretary where the NSUI-SOPU candidate lost by just three votes.

Post-Graduate Government College, Sector 11; Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGS), Sector 26; and Government College for Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 42, were the other three colleges where the INSO-led alliance emerged victorious.
Interestingly, SOPU and PUSU, which had joined hands in PGGC-11 despite years of political rivalry on the PU campus, faced defeat at the hands of a stronger alliance led by SOI-INSO which won all four seats in this college.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, emerged as the only co-educational college in the city to have elected a woman president, namely Ramandeep Kaur, of the Khalsa College Student Union-INSO alliance.

The alliance won all four posts of the college council, unlike last year when it had failed to bag the post of president.

It was only in DAV College, Sector 10, where the NSUI led-alliance emerged victorious on all the four posts. However, NSUI’s former ally, PUSU, faced defeat.

In fact in girls’ colleges, most of the winners were independents. GGS for Women, Sector 26, witnessed unanimous selection of all the four members of the college council. However, voting took place at PGGCG, Sector 11; PGGCG-42; and Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45.

The posts of president and vice-president at MCM DAV College, Sector 36, remained vacant as the candidates were disqualified. Similarly, there were no candidates for the post of joint secretary at PGGCG-11.

However, as the elections concluded peacefully in all the colleges, the authorities took a sigh of relief. Stringent security arrangements had been made, particularly at DAV College, Sector 10, keeping in view a few clashes between students in the run-up to the elections.
