In an unusual and eye-catching protest, students of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Amritsar have taken to sleeping in the institute’s hostel mess area to demand air-conditioners (AC) in their hostel rooms. Videos of the demonstration have quickly gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and sympathy from several netizens.
The students’ choice of protest location is notable, as the hostel mess is one of the few air-conditioned spaces in the hostel.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature is hovering around 45 degree Celsius in Amritsar due to an ongoing heat wave.
Commenting on the viral video, a former student who is currently based in the US said they faced a similar situation and raised this issue in the past.
Speaking to the Indian Express, IIM Amritsar Director Dr Nagarajan Ramamoorthy said they have taken the hostel building on lease as their hostel is under construction. Power supply lines in the current hostel building do not support heavy power loads. “We will install air coolers in the next couple of days in the hostel rooms to combat the heat,” he added.
IIM Amritsar was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2015 and is one of the youngest IIMs.
