Cops seek makers’ help to identify stolen vehicles

In order to speed up the identification process of over 100 stolen vehicles, recovered by the ATS in the last one year,Chandigarh Police are seeking the help of vehicle manufactures.

The recovered vehicles have been lying at Manimajra and Sector 3 police station for the past few months.

Since the recovery, police have been faced with the task of identifying original owners and handing over the vehicles to them. The original details; chassis and engine numbers have been tampered and replaced with fake ones in most vehicles which included four trucks and a JCB backhoe loader, reportedly stolen from Rajasthan.

As the vehicles which were recovered are fairly new, companies are expected to have a record of certain parts with unique numbers which have been installed in the vehicles which can help in identifying them. The Police have collected original details, which had not been tampered with,of around 20 Hyundai cars.

They have forwarded the details to vehicle manufacturer through the internet and have sought their help. Further, shell and pump numbers of all Mahindra Bolero jeeps have also been collected. The shell and the pumps installed in every vehicle have a separate number.

The police have send these to the company plant in Nashik,Maharashtra,to identify the original chassis and engine numbers of the vehicles.

At present only twenty out of the around 100 cars recovered by the ATS has been identified. While some have been handed back to their owners, many have yet to be identified. Police believe that majority of the owners have claimed insurance for their vehicles and are therefore not coming to take them.

We have compiled details of around 45 vehicles and forwarded them to the manufactures. We hope to identify more vehicles after we receive their response”.

Earlier this year,in a massive recovery,Police had arrested six people and had recovered 58 vehicles which they had sold to unsuspecting people for throw away prices. The Police had also recovered 42 stolen vehicles from a different gang in October last year.
