The Children’s Day in Mohali turned into a major healthcare milestone as Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh inaugurated a new 50-bedded Paediatric Block at AIMS-Mohali and led a state-wide message of preventive care by administering polio drops to children at the Phase 7 Aam Aadmi Clinic.
At AIMS Mohali, the minister unveiled the state-of-the-art Paediatric Block, featuring a 6-bedded PICU, High Dependency Unit, child-friendly wards, a playroom, and a Paediatric Skill Lab designed to deliver comprehensive, family-centered care. Director MER Dr Avnish Kumar, Director Principal Dr Bhavneet Bharti, and Civil Surgeon Dr Sangita Jain were present at the launch.
A significant moment of the day was the signing of an MoU between AIMS-Mohali and noted paediatrician and neonatologist Dr R S Bedi to strengthen neonatal services through shared expertise and advanced care protocols.
Dr Singh also announced that a dedicated paediatric emergency room will soon come up in Block 2, further expanding specialised emergency care for children.
Adding a creative touch to the celebrations, AIMS-Mohali introduced “Book in a Nook”, a child-friendly reading corner aimed at cultivating reading habits and reducing screen time. The initiative will also support medical humanities learning for MBBS students.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare, the minister said the number of Aam Aadmi Clinics will be increased from 881 to 1,100. The panel of free lab tests has been expanded from 38 to 47, and the list of free medicines from 80 to 112. He added that all 140 government health facilities will soon be upgraded with comprehensive Mother and Child Health services, including delivery and cesarean facilities.
Preparing for the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the minister said robust medical arrangements will be made at Sri Anandpur Sahib and Ropar, with 20 temporary Aam Aadmi Clinics and emergency teams from medical colleges deployed to ensure seamless health services.
