The Tarn Taran bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday named Harjeet Singh Sandhu as its candidate for the upcoming Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll. Sandhu, 40, joined the party in January 2022 ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections and was appointed district president in December 2022. The announcement comes much earlier than expected, as the BJP had declared its Ludhiana West bypoll candidate just 19 days before the election date. The Tarn Taran bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.

Originally with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sandhu began his political career in 2007 with the Youth Akali Dal.

From 2009 to 2012, Sandhu served as Youth Akali Dal (YAD) circle president, followed by District General Secretary, YAD, from 2012 to 2015. He was also the state General Secretary, YAD, from 2015 to 2019. From 2019 to December 2021, Sandhu was state president of the Youth Akali Dal. Sandhu claimed BJP’s vote share in Tarn Taran has significantly increased in Panchayat and Nagar Council polls since 2022. Tarn Taran is part of the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency.
