Two men died while three others were injured after the roof of their rented accommodation collapsed in Ragho Majra area of Patiala, Tuesday late. The two deceased were brothers, said police.
Patiala is among the worst-hit districts in the current flood situation in Punjab. The waters from local rivulet Badi Nadi have inundated several segments of the district including the city areas.
Police said that the structure was very old and in a dilapidated state. The two deceased were identified as Rama Shankar (55) and Munna Lal (35), natives of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, who were living in Patiala from the past two decades.
Ganga Ram, one of the injured, said that both deceased were married and their families were back home in UP. “Their third brother has also been injured. However, both of them died on the spot. We work as fruit sellers in local mandi and we arrived in our room around 9 pm. After having food, we were resting when the roof suddenly collapsed and there was no time to escape. Locals rushed for help and pulled us out from the debris but both of them had died,” he said. Inspector Sukhwinder Singh Gill, SHO Patiala Kotwali police station said that inquest proceedings were filed under section 174 of CrPC.
Meanwhile, Patiala witnessed fresh rainfall Wednesday which led to waterlogging in some city areas.
The floodgates of Jacob Drain near Dakala Chungi were opened by Patiala Municipal Corporation to facilitate the drainage of rainwater from the low-lying areas of the city.
