The Bengaluru police recently booked an alleged Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader for making derogatory remarks against the members of a minority community during a Facebook Live session.

The accused, Bijan Das, was booked based on a complaint filed by one Ashik Hussain on July 30. The police registered the case against Das under Sections 295A (punishment for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

As per the complaint of Hussain, Das made objectionable comments in Bengali on Facebook Live on July 19. Das’s Facebook profile says he is a resident of Bengaluru, associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and a VHP pracharak. He is said to be a native of the Dharmanagar district of Tripura.

A police officer from the Adugodi police station said they have received the video link from the complainant and sought more details to identify the suspect.

When Indian Express contacted local VHP sources, they said Das is not a member of the state unit of the organisation.
