A 40-year-old man in Karnataka’s Hubbali died by suicide allegedly after being harassed by his estranged wife, who sought Rs 20 lakh to settle their divorce case, the police said.
Petaru Gollapalli, an employee at a private firm, died by suicide at his residence in Chamundeshwari Nagar in Hubballi on January 26, the police said.
Petaru left behind a note allegedly blaming his wife Feebhe, following which his brother Eshayya Gollapalli lodged a complaint at Ashok Nagar police station. The police then booked Feebhe under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
As per the FIR, Petaru married Feebhe two years ago. However, three months after the wedding, she allegedly returned to her maternal house.
A private school teacher, Feebhe had filed for divorce and court proceedings were on. A court hearing was set for Monday and Feebhe was set to demand Rs 20 lakh, her lawyer had revealed. It was this development that upset Petaru, his family alleged.
Speaking to the media, Eshayya alleged that Petaru had been assaulted by Feebhe’s brother and a police case had been lodged. Blaming Feebhe for Petaru’s death, Eshayya demanded her arrest. “We need justice,” he added.
In the note he left behind, Petaru apologised to his father and asked his sibling to take care of their parents, the police said. He allegedly also mentioned that the family should reveal that he died because of his wife’s torture.
