The Karnataka government and the Azim Premji Foundation on Saturday signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) agreeing to provide eggs four days a week, as a part of special nutrition food, for midday meals at all government schools.
Currently, the government is already providing eggs two days a week and with this initiative, government school students will get eggs six days a week. The foundation will allocate Rs 1,500 crore, for three years, to fund the egg distribution initiative.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who inaugurated the programme, lauded the Azim Premji Foundation for its “historic” initiative to provide nutritious meals to school children. Highlighting the critical role of quality food in ensuring mental health and better education he said, “I have witnessed children coming to school without breakfast and staying until noon without lunch. This prompted us to provide meals and eggs for two days a week. Now, the Azim Premji Foundation has stepped in to provide eggs and supplementary nutritious food for four additional days.”
The Chief Minister also emphasised the importance of scientific and ideological development of students, encouraging them to become socially responsible individuals. “Our goal is to create opportunities for quality education for poor children. This is why we are providing uniforms, shoes, and socks, and opening more residential schools,” he added.
The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Wipro Founder Chairman Azim Premji, among others.
Premji, while speaking at the event said, “It is an honour and privilege to partner with the Karnataka government for this significant initiative. I am committed to serve my home state through these efforts. My partnership with the state government for the last 25 years has been productive and constructive. We believe that along with education, adding nutritional value through midday meals is equally important.”
