Bengaluru to receive light rainfall till Nov 15
Bengaluru received 0.7 mm of rainfall Saturday morning. In its weather forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the city will receive light rainfall till November 15.
“Thunderstorm along with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Dakshina Kannada & Udupi districts in coastal Karnataka. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kodagu, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru districts in south interior Karnataka,” the IMD said.

The museum comprises hi-tech multimedia Exhibit Galleries, a Sound Garden, a Learning Centre for music education, and several performance spaces. Established in 2019, the museum is one of its kind that chronicles the evolution of music in different forms in India.
People hit by soaring prices have received a jolt in the state as the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has decided to hike the price of the Nandini brand milk and curd by Rs 3. The new prices will be effective starting Tuesday.
The decision was taken at an administrative board meeting of KMF and was approved by the government, said KMF chairperson Balachandra Jarkiholi. The hike, according to the KMF, is meant to aid farmers involved in animal husbandry who have been hit by various problems, including floods and lumpy skin disease in cattle. Read more
As major parties in Karnataka have embarked on yatras in the run-up to the 2023 Assembly elections, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah has unveiled an ultra-luxury bus to be used for his yatra, one of the two announced by the Congress.
While the Congress yatras are scheduled for January, Siddaramaiah took a trial run of the bus on Sunday by travelling to Kolar along with a few other leaders. Videos showing features of the bus were shared on social media.
The air-conditioned bus is from the Japanese company Isuzu and is altered to seat six people, with comfortable pushback seats and a table in the middle. Four seats are placed on one side of the bus, with two seats on the other side separated by a small walkway. Read more
A BJP leader from Kalaburagi, who had issued a death threat to Congress MLA Priyank Kharge, was arrested and released on bail after the local Congress unit threatened to disrupt Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s programme in Kalaburagi over the issue.
Manikanth Rathod was arrested in Hyderabad on Sunday evening and released on bail Monday. Rathod had threatened Kharge, son of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, at a press conference held on Friday. “You (Kharge) can shoot us with an AK-47 rifle or a gun. We are ready to die. We are also ready to shoot you,” Rathod had said. Read more
At an event to celebrate the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru and children's day, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot presented Hoysala and Keladi Channama Shourya awards to Namratha, Prarthana, Kousalya, Keerthi Vivek and Kavya Bhaskar Hegde. A decision to give the saffron paint to classrooms constructed under the Viveka scheme in Karnataka has evoked strong reactions from the Opposition Congress, which accused the BJP government of “saffronisation”.
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Congress state working president Salim Ahmed said the government had resorted to diversionary tactics over the past three years. “They should be ashamed. Poor roads have claimed yet another life in Karnataka as an ex-serviceman was killed in an accident at Kaaremane Gate, Sathanur near Mandya on Sunday, according to the police.
Officers identified the deceased as S N Kumar, 39, who had recently retired from the armed forces. He had then been selected as a constable with the state police and had been undergoing training in Bengaluru for the past six months.
The accident occurred when Kumar, who was visiting his village, tried to avoid a pothole near Sathanur, officers said. Read more
Karnataka school education minister B C Nagesh has triggered a fresh controversy by indicating that over 7,500 new classrooms being constructed under the Viveka scheme in the state will be painted saffron.
Speaking at an event in the north Karnataka district of Gadag on Sunday, the BJP minister said, “The new Viveka classrooms will be saffron in colour as per the suggestion of architects and not in line with any ideology.” Nagesh has been at the forefront of controversies in connection with the alleged saffronisation of school textbooks and alleged overreach in terms of prescribing uniforms following a controversy over the use of hijabs in a few state schools.
The latest move has been criticised by some educationists and the Opposition who have pointed out that it is inappropriate for secular institutions like a government school classroom to be painted saffron. Traffic on Jeevan Bima Nagar, Indiranagar, and Halasoor traffic police limits are reportedly moving slow as roads are white-topped in and around East Bengaluru. Access from Indiranagar to Old Madras Road has been blocked around the Indiranagar BDA complex area.
The white-topping work is being carried out on 100 Feet Road, parts of Old Madras Road.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday sought approval from the government to white-top 39 more roads, stretching across 114.46 km in the city, at an estimated cost Rs 1,449 crore, officials said. This will be the third phase of the white-topping project in Bengaluru. Read more.
A school bus suffers a breakdown at Varthur Government PU College junction early Monday morning. This has led to slow-moving traffic in the surrounding area.
Whitefield Traffic Police has appealed the commuters to "kindly co-operate and maintain lane discipline." The area officer and staff are present at the junction, and are assisting the traffic movement.
The bus will soon be moved from the site of the incident.
While reacting to Congress MLA Tanveer Sait’s proposal to install a 100-feet statue of Tipu Sultan at Srirangapatna in Karnataka’s Mandya district, JD(S) state president CM Ibrahim Sunday said there was no culture of setting up statues among Muslims. On Saturday, Sait triggered strong reactions from the ruling BJP over his proposal to install the statue. The incident wherein a group of people had threatened to file a cheating complaint against a local BJP leader for allegedly not paying the assured amount to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent rally near Bengaluru was resolved amicably. The group had staged a protest at Shidlaghatta in Chikkaballapur district Saturday, accusing the local BJP leader of paying only Rs 200 each for participating in the rally held near Devanahalli after assuring them Rs 500 each. In 1996, when the Karnataka forest department was looking for someone to write a proposal for central funds to conserve the lakes of Bengaluru, they turned to Birdwatchers’ Field Club of Bangalore – an amateur club whose members had done serious scientific work to study lakes and their ability to support bird life in the city.
One of the oldest standing members of the club, ecologist and ornithologist M B Krishna, now 61, drew on the experience of a report prepared by the Birdwatcher’s Club, titled `Water Birds and Wetlands of Bangalore: A report on the status, water quality, plankton, and bird populations of the lakes in and around Bangalore and Maddur’, to write the proposal.
The proposal prepared on behalf of the forest department brought the Karnataka government Rs 28 crore of funds from the River Action Directorate to conserve urban lakes. It has been responsible for saving several lakes in Bengaluru, including the Hebbal lake in north Bengaluru – earmarked for a bus stand at the time – and the Agara lake in the south.
“At that point, nobody in Bengaluru had provided a snapshot of the lakes in the city as we had done. Some people had done a thesis on individual lakes but there was no single snapshot of how the lakes looked comparatively. We did that. Twice, we collected water samples for water quality analysis and we came out with reports providing information on where the birds were located,” said Dr Krishna.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has sought approval from the government to white-top 39 more roads, stretching across 114.46 km in the city, at an estimated cost Rs 1,449 crore, officials said.
This will be the third phase of the white-topping project in Bengaluru. A proposal in this regard was recently submitted to the state government seeking nod and funds for the road infrastructure project, they added.
Among the key roads that will be white-topped are the Outer Ring Road (ORR) from Silk Board to KR Puram, Hennur Main Road, Horamavu Agara Road, Kaggadasapura Main Road, Kammanahalli Main Road, Ulsoor Lake Road, New Thippasandra Main Road, Indiranagar Double Road, Indiranagar 12th Main Road and Inner Ring Road at Yeshwanthpur, among others.
