Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) has demanded compensation to farmers at a rate of Rs 10,000 per hectare for the loss of their crops due to the current excessive monsoon rains.
Addressing mediapersons here on Friday,GPP general secretary Gordhan Zadaphia said that his party would submit a memorandum to all the district collectors on October 14,seeking a fair compensation package at a rate of Rs 10,000 per acre for loss of crops and its immediate payment to the farmers.
He warned that his party would organise agitations all across the state if the state government did not take immediate and adequate action on their demands.
GPP leader said that there was unused amount of Rs 2,300 crore as natural calamity fund available with the state government and farmers could be paid compensation without any delay from the fund.
He said that despite the availability of fund,Narendra Modi government had not announced the compensation package and was allegedly forcing the farmers to go for suicide.
According to Zadaphia,about 50 per cent of groundnut crop and 70 per cent of cotton crops had been spoiled due to the rains. Groundnut and cotton are the main cash crops in the state.
