Days after Gujarat got its new BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma, a scuffle broke out between BJP worker Dinesh Savaliya from Ward No 2 and party treasurer Shailesh Jariwala at the Surat party headquarters on Wednesday evening. A video of the fight soon went viral on social media.
Following the incident, Surat BJP president Paresh Patel issued notices to both leaders, asking them to respond within three days. Jariwala also filed a police complaint against Savaliya.
Earlier that day, Patel had held a meeting with party leaders and workers at the Udhna office to discuss an upcoming event. After the meeting ended, Savaliya was sitting in the waiting room with three friends. When the peon, Naresh, failed to serve them tea within half an hour and instead served others, Savaliya allegedly got angry and used abusive language in front of youth BJP members present there.
Hearing the commotion, BJP worker Shailesh Patel alerted treasurer Shailesh Jariwala, who came to the room and “tried to calm Savaliya down”. However, the argument escalated into a physical fight. Savaliya allegedly tried to hit Jariwala with a chair before other members intervened.
Videos of the altercation quickly surfaced online, drawing widespread attention.
On Wednesday night, Surat BJP president Paresh Patel said, “We will not tolerate such indiscipline. Notices have been issued to both parties seeking an explanation within three days. The fact that someone recorded and circulated the video on social media is equally unacceptable. We have asked police to identify who shared it, as it damages the party’s image.”
Later that night, the Udhna police registered an FIR against Savaliya under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning voluntarily causing hurt, using obscene language in a public place, and criminal intimidation.
In his complaint, Jariwala alleged that Savaliya slapped him multiple times and tried to hit him with a chair after being told to calm down.
When contacted, Savaliya said, “I have been working for the BJP for 17 years… I have not fought any election nor held any post in the party, but my motive is to work for the party as a committed worker… I told the peon to bring tea for us, we waited for half an hour, and later the peon came and gave tea to other people, not to us. In front of my party workers, it was an insult to me. I scolded the peon in front of the people present in the waiting room… Jariwala, who holds the post of treasurer, came rushing at me and started a quarrel. We both had a freehand fight. The misbehaviour by the peon in the party office does not come under the purview of the treasurer, and he took the side of the peon and started scolding me… The treasurer’s job is to manage accounts, not to interfere in such matters. I will respond to the notice appropriately.”
Police inspector S N Desai confirmed the complaint and said they were investigating who filmed and circulated the video.
Jariwala, meanwhile, maintained, “Dinesh Savaliya misbehaved with me when I tried to stop him from using abusive language against the peon. His arrogance was like that; he slapped me in front of the party leaders and workers, which cannot be tolerated, so I registered an offence against him with the Udhna police station. I will also make an appropriate reply to the notice and submit it to the Surat BJP president on time.”
