The Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) on Saturday said it had seized 5.5 tonnes of suspected adulterated ghee, worth Rs 35 lakh, from a Banaskantha-based unit, identified as Shree Sales, on September 5.

A statement from FDCA Commissioner H G Koshia said that the agency had been keeping a close watch on Shree Sales located in Chandisar GIDC in Banaskantha after a previous seizure of over 650 kg of suspected adulterated ghee worth more than Rs 3.5 lakh in June this year.

On September 5, FDCA officials again visited the premises, inspected the godown and recovered 124 tins of 15 kg of “Gumar Brand” ghee and 232 tins of 15 kg pack of unlabeled ghee in suspicious condition. Based on strong suspicion of adulteration, two ghee samples were taken for testing and the remaining quantity of about 5.5 tons was seized, the estimated value of which is more than Rs 35 lakh, said the FDCA. An inspection of the manufacturing area revealed that no quantity of ghee or any other raw materials was found from the spot. Additionally, empty boxes of palm oil were found at the manufacturing site, said the FDCA. Therefore, based on the strong suspicion that the said ghee was adulterated with palm oil, action was taken by the FDCA.

A total of 46 tonnes or 46,000 kg of suspicious food items worth Rs1.8 crore have been seized from 10 places across the state in August by the Gujarat FDCA. At least 28 samples of food items have been sent to the lab for testing, said the officials.
