CEPT University Ahmedabad will host ‘BUILDSPAN 2025′, a bridge-designing and making competition, as part of Engineers’ Day celebrations on its campus on September 13.

The event will invite students to apply creativity, technical expertise, and teamwork to design and construct model bridges under real-world constraints with the theme “Engineering the Future: Build One Bridge at a Time”.

An initiative by the faculty of technology at CEPT University, the competition also offers a platform for young innovators to test ideas, push boundaries, and celebrate the synergy of engineering and design.

Commenting on the initiative, Prof Komal Parikh, faculty member and in-charge of the event, told The Indian Express, “This event has taken place earlier as well but this is the first time it is happening as part of Engineers’ Day. Also, usually it used to be held in smaller groups and for first-year students. But this time, we thought of opening it to all.”

Stating that bridge design and building is already part of the curriculum, Prof Parikh replied in the negative when asked if the competition was being held in the context of recent bridge collapse incidents. “It is to make the students understand engineering principles and how things work in a real-life situation. It is to sensitise them on the design and testing of bridges, which is a part of our studios at CEPT too,” she said.

“It is designed to challenge young minds to think beyond textbooks, apply engineering principles to real-world problems, and experience the excitement of building something tangible. Through this competition, we aim to celebrate Engineers’ Day by nurturing creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills,” she added.

The competition is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from engineering, architecture, design, and urban design programmes. Students can participate in teams of up to four members.
