FLOATING THE concept of “clean, green and blue Ahmedabad”, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Commissioner D Thara officially announced the plan to keep cars off roads on certain days in her draft annual budget for 2016-17 presented on Thursday.
In order to bring down pollution levels and ease traffic woes, the AMC’s annual draft budget of Rs 5,655 crore categorically talks about the importance of a car-free day.
An estimated Rs 10 crore would be allocated under the pollution action control plan.
“With the number of vehicles increasing at a very fast pace, the traffic problem has emerged as a major concern. Due to this, not only labour, time and expense of residents are going waste, but also the pollution levels have shot up. Thus, it is very important to follow car free days, traffic rules and use of public transport system,” the draft budget stated.
Municipal Commissioner D Thara, during the presentation of the draft budget, stressed the need to create a clean environment infrastructure.
“This year’s budget aims at providing clean air, green cover and portable water by strengthening environment, drainage and water supply projects. This will also help in reduction of many water- and air-borne diseases,” she said.
The AMC also proposed development of 5,000 locations as designated parking lots. For this, 200 women working under self-help groups would be trained and then employed as “parking marshals”.
Using the information technology, various mobile apps were also proposed under the budget.
